Cars

After searching around the web for options to hook my iPhone to my A3 I decided to go with a spec.dock. It is basically what I saw a user on vwvortex.com build for ~$200 and a bunch of hours of work for $300.

The kit includes a small unit that connects an iPhone dock to a Audi or VW radio, and the two appropriate wires specifically for my A3. An instruction booklet was also included for the unit and spec.dock provided me with tons of installation literature including car specific instructions with photos, they really make it idiot-proof and easy.

My first attempt to remove the Audi Symphony II Radio was a failure. Audi does not supply the owner of the vehicles the small metal tools needed to remove the radio. I called a local car stereo place in upstate NY (Toads Stereo in Cairo NY) whom I have dealt with in the past and were always real good, the guy there told me that they didn’t sell them, but you can order them online. He said they usually just fabricate them out of metal though instead.

I looked up the shape of the keys online and attempted to cut them out of sheet metal with tin snips. I was unsuccessful in my attempts and ended up ordering them(like $12 online? maybe less..) , but after seeing them and using them I realized how the release mechanism inside worked and had I positioned my fabricated ones better they would have worked fine.

And then I stopped taking photos.

But I got the all the wiring run from the ashtray to the glovebox where I was leaving the unit and back to the stereo, but soemthing was wrong. The plugs that were in the images of the pdf that spec.docks had sent showed 3 colored plugs that could be connected to be one larger plug (Think Voltron) but instead I had  one large black plug (Think Batman?) which clearly included my speaker wires, so that had to stay plugged in… spec.dock was closed so I left all the wiring in and put the car back together.

I called specdock to order the adapter plug i needed and the guy there told me that if I didn’t need to keep the function of my Satellite Radio that i didn’t need $50 plug and that he woudl just sent me the adapter wire for free, nice.

Two days later Voltron was plugged in and everything is working sweet. I also got a dock entender cable and a car mount for my phone incase i need the phone for navi, watch video, or use Dynolicious (sweet iPhone App).

I’ll get some photos and finalize this in a few days.

I finally bought my new car!

2006 A3 3.2L Quattro Lava Grey

2006 A3 3.2L Quattro Lava Grey

Oh the joy! So much fun to drive, so easy to drive, and it’s quite the sleeper.

Now I need to get the windows tinted and start researching the best solution for iPhone integration. I either need to get something like a DICE connector for my factory Audi 6 disk Bose system or replace the factory system with a aftermarket face which could potentially include a 7″ video screen that can play video from my iPhone and also support a GPS navigation which I do not currently integrated into the car. (I share Garmin Nuvi 650 with Sylvia)

Eventually I would like to do some minor performance upgrades (Haldex Performance Controller, Milltek Exhaust, K&N Cold Air Intake) and some cosmetic upgrades (Switch out chrome grille for black, replace US plate holder with a Euro Plate and holder, powder coat current wheels black to match new grille.)

I will post more photos once I get another car wash and take them, I will also post photos and a walk-through of any projects I do on the car.

Took a few photos of my car, some with sylvia’s car too.

Thinking no on the car

So as of right now it’s a no go in the car A4 wagon. It isnt exactly what I wanted, and felt a little sluggish. I would rather wait it out, save up, and find a Audi A3 3.2L. It’s what needs to happen… Now the search begins…

Took me almost a month to write anything new, I’m no good at this.

Nothing too new to write, car is still in the process, Audi of Huntington’s service really sucks. After trying to test drive the car a total of three times and the battery being dead, finally the fourth time was the charm and I got to drive the car, it was nice, not quite as fast as I would like, but very comfortable and nice to drive. Price is good, the Audi of Huntington just has poor incompetent help. Hopefully they will realize the terrible service they gave me and hook me up with a good price on the car or throw in some nice free options.

Either way I will attempt to locate something else ware and put my 23k in the hands of someone who will take care of customers.

Shopping for Cars

I started shopping for cars, I originally really wanted an Audi A3 3.2 but there were none cheap, and their gas mileage is less then desirable. A3s with a 2.0T engine do not come in Quattro, so scratch that. I am currently down to looking at a 2005 Subaru Legacy GT Limited and a 2005 Audi A4 2.0T Avant. I’m leaning much more to the Audi because despite being much slower it gets much better gas mileage, and these days, I’ll sacrifice 50hp to get 10mpg better. So right now that’s that… Hopefully it all works out.

The Audi

The Audi

When I first went to the Audi dealer I had already looked up the car on the Internet, and as quoted on their site

“2005.5 Audi A4 All-Wheel Drive Wagon in Amazing Dolphin Gray Metallic with Warm Ebony Leather Interior and Walnut Wood Trim.Cold Weather Package with Premium Package and 17-inch Cast Alloy Wheels.Certified by Audi Trained Techs and low %2.9 financing for 60 Mths.Great Buy”

INDEED A GREAT BUY! %2.9…

I pulled the Web site up on my iPhone and showed it to them, the salesman brought it to his manager who informed us that is was a typo. So the CPO salesman told me %5.9 is the best they do for CPO’s. But i had a memory of seeing something on the Audi Web site about some APR deal, so I began to look it up on my iPhone, didn’t load, got tired of waiting for the phone and headed out. Once i got home i looked up the specials on the Audi Web site and found that they are offering %3.9APR on all 2005 CPO’s. I called the Audi dealer back and informed them of this, they told me that they had to look it up and they would get back to me… I’m waiting….
